This drug is an enzyme inhibitor which prevents the formation of uric acid, the waste product which causes gout. This means that it prevents future attacks of gout rather than being a treatment for a bad attack of gout.

This drug is useful for people with troublesome gout (frequent or severe attacks) which cannot be prevented in any other way. It can be useful where the gout is associated with tophi (swellings under the skin containing uric acid crystals) or kidney problems. It is not useful for any condition other than gout.

Ideally, the regular use of a good dose of Zyloric should prevent further attacks of gout. Apart from the benefit in terms of less pain, the fewer bad attacks of gout you have the less long term damage there will be to your joints. It will also shrink tophi in the skin and bones.
