What is Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids represent the inflammation of the lower rectum or of the veins around the anus.

Anatomy of Hemorrhoids

This is due to the straining to move the stool. Factors that determine the development of this medical condition include: aging, pregnancy, diarrhea or acute constipation, and the anal intercourse. Some women suffer from retention of water because of the menstruation or of the premenstrual syndrome. Hypertension can cause Hemorrhoids because of connections between that the vena cava and the portal vein which occurs in the rectal wall. Obesity is a factor that increases the rectal vein pressure. And when you sit for a long period of time you can develop Hemorrhoids. Poor muscle tone or unhealthy posture result into a much higher pressure for the rectal veins. Pregnancy can cause hypertension and may increase a strain during of bowel movements, and so the presence of this disorder can be associated with the act of pregnancy. Anal sex without sufficient lubricating oil may also cause an excessive strain of rectal veins, and it is a common cause of the Hemorrhoids among healthy young adults. An excessive consumption of caffeine or alcohol also causes this painful disease. Both of these factors also cause diarrhea. Notice that ingestion of caffeine increases the blood pressure, but this does not trigger acute hypertension. Alcohol can cause an alcoholic liver illness that leads to a portal hypertension. This illness can appear in each person that presents certain sensitivity in the anal region, especially men and women over the age of 45 and 65 years old can easily develop Hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids Symptoms

There are two types of nerves involved when discussing Hemorrhoids symptoms: visceral (nerves of pressure) and somatic (nerves of pain) nerves. Internal Hemorrhoids are usually painless and present themselves as enlarged or bulges into the anal canal. Defecation usually becomes painful and irritated in the case of individuals who suffer from Hemorrhoids. Other symptoms may also include skin irritation. The medium swollen veins may secrete some mucus and cause a minor irritation and also pain. Most of them are not painful. If they become very large, they can bulge from the anus. They are painful if they are squeezed. The swelling is enhanced by a muscle that controls the anus.

Itching is another rather frequent complaint among those suffering from Hemorrhoids; physicians have linked this symptom to the presence of the irritation of the individual’s anal skin. All patients who have been diagnosed with the presence of Hemorrhoids often complain of moderate to severe discomfort. This is highly uncomfortable feeling caused by bulging of the hemorrhoid in the end portion of the anal canal. The larger the hemorrhoid, the greater the discomfort is. The external type of this medical disorder is thought to be the most painful. It forms an external clot that causes severe pain, inflammation and swelling. When it is irritated it can bleed or it gets an itch. These can be a serious problem and requires a certain evaluation.

Hemorrhoids Treatment

Hemorrhoids treatments vary in their effectiveness, risk, and cost. Hemorrhoids can be a temporary and mild condition that heals spontaneously and by the same ways recommended for the prevention. There is not a medicine that can cure this disorder, but some local treatments like warm baths, extendable showerhead, using a bidet, a topical analgesic (like Nupercainal), cold compress can provide temporary relief. In the case of an external hemorrhoid affection with a lump of small size, the condition may be kept under control with warm baths that makes the vessels from rectal region being relaxed. Use of special creams during some final stages of that hemorrhoid flare-up will also assure relief and might stop the irritation and development. Creams that contain preparations with steroid base weaken the skin and can contribute to a further flare-up. Keep this area dry and clean, with a lubrication provided by the hemorrhoidal lubricant or a cream.

Some natural Hemorrhoids treatments can also prove quite helpful: self-care measures, includes natural remedies or herbal that shouldn’t be taken without medical consent. Supplements to strengthen vein walls and taking herbs, drinking a special tea called chamomile for several days. Eating agents like Psyllium seed and plantain helps to create a softer stool and makes it easier to pass, to minimize irritation caused by Hemorrhoids. You should reduce the regional pressure to improve the muscle tones and posture and this requires psychological and physical reeducation (this is a method called Alexander Technique). Application of soothing agent’s astringents and honey and using a correct position for bowel moves is also recommended.

A combination of external and internal Hemorrhoids treatment is mostly prescribed. Supplements can help prevent and treat complications of Hemorrhoids like Horse-chestnut, Butchers Broom, and bilberry extract. Surgical or non medicinal treatments are Hemorrhoidolysis, Rubber band ligation, injection therapy, cryosurgery, coagulation, laser, Hemorrhoidectomy, Enema and Doppler Guided Hemorrhoidal Artery Ligation. There are two types of Hemorrhoids: prolapsed and thrombosed external ones.

Change your lifestyle to cure or prevent an inactive colon or an overfilled one. You can change your diet with food that contains corn cereals, corn bread, vegetables and fruit. You can use natural oils in your food. If you perform a few daily exercises (if you follow a mild exercise routine) and drink more water you will be able to keep your disease under control. The use of certain products regulates your digestive functions. Eating linen seeds and maybe some bran also helps. The balms are also a very good treatment. The effects of them are: decreasing inflammation and the itching, stimulating tissue healing, dissolving coagulated blood, and killing the bacterium that causes an infection in the affected area, reducing the inflammation and the itching, the cramps in the rectal sphincter, the cramps and contractions of intestines and so on.

Hemorrhoids can also be treated endoscopically, a procedure that helps to destroy the unwanted tissue. The most important thing is to wear cotton underwear and to loosen the clothing, to use a moist toilet paper and taking aspirin or acetaminophen. You should also exercise the buttocks musculature. An analgesic is prescribed before and after the surgery for Hemorrhoids: aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAIDS) and some anticoagulants that are not recommended to take them for two weeks after this because they may increase the bleeding.
