Do not use Acarbose:

Take special care with Acarbose

Acarbose has blood glucose lowering effect, but do not give yourself hypoglycemia (abnormally low blood sugar). However, concomitant treatment with Acarbose and insulin or oral hypoglycaemic dosage (eg, sulfonylurea) cause hypoglycemia (abnormally low blood sugar). In such cases, take pure glucose (dextrose tablets) and no sugar. In individual cases hypoglycaemic coma may occur.

Taking Acarbose with food and drink

It is important to continue with the recommended dietary guidelines in the treatment with Acarbose tablets. One should not stop treatment with Acarbose without consulting a doctor because it may mean an increase in blood sugar.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

There's limited experience of use when pregnant. Ask your doctor for more than temporary use of Acarbose during pregnancy. Acarbose should not be used during lactation. You should consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Driving and using machines

Acarbose does not affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.

Using other medicines

The treatment effect may be affected if Acarbose and digestive enzyme or cholestyramine (used to treat high blood fats) are taken simultaneously. Acarbose may affect digoxin (a heart medication) during concomitant therapy. You should consult your doctor before use of concomitant medications.

Acarbose dosage

The Acarbose dosage should be determined by the physician, who will adjust it individually for you. You should wait for the effect of dietary treatment before taking this medication. Acarbose tablets should be swallowed whole with fluid just before eating or chewing with food at the beginning of a meal. In general you should start with a low dose and then slowly raise to reduce any intestinal side effects. If you take too many tablets, you should avoid carbohydrate food and drink for about 4-6 hours after tablet intake.

Acarbose side effects

Acarbose side effects may occur but please note that not everybody gets them.

Very common (affect more than 1 in 10 patients)

• flatulence

Common: (less than 1 in 10 but more than 1 in 100)

• diarrhea, stomach / abdominal pain
• nausea, vomiting, acid reflux

Rare (less than 1 in 1000 patients and more than 1 in 10 000)

• swelling, edema, jaundice.

Not known (can not be estimated from available data)

Reduced platelet count (platelets), allergic reaction with symptoms such as rashes and hives, pneumatosis cystoid intestinalis (intestinal disease with gas-filled vesicles in the intestinal mucosa). In patients given standard doses (50-100 mg three times daily) abnormal liver function tests have occured although values can return to normal levels during Acarbose therapy. In isolated cases, severe liver damage with or without jaundice occurred. In these cases, Acarbose treatment immediately discontinued. Your doctor may prescribe blood tests periodically during the first year of treatment. If you do not follow strict diabetic diet, bowel symptoms worse. This is especially true when taking sugar or sugary foods due to carbohydrate fermentation in the intestine increases. In rare, extremely rare cases, bowel obstruction occur.
