Donepezil (donepezil hydrochloride) belongs to a group of drugs called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. Donepezil increases the levels of a substance in the brain (acetylcholine), which is involved in memory, by slowing the breakdown of acetylcholine. Primarily it's used to treat the symptoms of dementia associated with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. These symptoms include progressive memory loss, confusion and behavioral changes. As a consequence of these symptoms, sufferers of Alzheimer's disease find it harder and harder to perform normal daily activities.

Please note that Alzheimer's disease can severely impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. Therefore, you must first discuss with your doctor if you plan to drive or operate machinery.
It may be that the medicine makes you feel tired and dizzy, and you can get muscle cramps. If you experience any of these symptoms then you should not drive or operate machinery.
You are solely responsible for the assessment of your ability to drive or to perform activities requiring alertness. One of the factors that may affect your ability to do these is the use of drugs, such as Donepezil, because of their effects and / or side effects.

How to take Donepezil
It is common practice to start your Donepezil treatment by taking a white tablet 5 mg in the evening. After a month, your doctor may ask you to take one yellow tablet 10 mg in the evening.
Donepezil tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water at night before going to bed. The tablet strength you will take may change depending on how long you take the medicine and what your doctor recommends. The maximum recommended Donepezil dose is 10 mg in the evening. Always take your medicine as your doctor has told you. Do not change the Donepezil dose without the advice of a doctor.
Your doctor or pharmacist will advise you on how long to take your Donepezil medication. You must see your doctor regularly to review your treatment and assess your symptoms.
Do not take more than one tablet a day. If you take too much medicine, or if a child has taken the drug inadvertently, contact a doctor, hospital or poison control center to assess the potential risk. Symptoms of Donepezil overdose include nausea and vomiting, drooling, sweating, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure (light-headedness or dizziness when standing), difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness and seizures or convulsions.
If you forget to take Donepezil just take one tablet the next day at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten tablet. If you forget to take your Donepezil medicine for more than a week, call your doctor before taking any more medicine.
Do not stop taking Donepezil unless your doctor tells you to do so. If you stop taking Donepezil, the benefits of treatment will gradually fade.
